FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
The NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) is a standardized test that every nurse must pass in order to obtain licensure in the United States and Canada. It is designed to assess the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for safe and effective practice as an entry-level nurse.
The NCLEX is developed and administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). This organization works closely with regulatory bodies in each state and province to ensure that the exam reflects current nursing practice standards.
There are two versions of the NCLEX: the NCLEX-RN for registered nurses and the NCLEX-PN for licensed practical nurses/licensed vocational nurses (LPN/LVN). The content of the exams is tailored to reflect the scope of practice for each level of nursing.
To register for the NCLEX, you must first apply for licensure with the nursing regulatory body in the state or province where you wish to practice. Once your application is approved, you will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) from Pearson VUE, the company that administers the exam. You can then schedule your exam appointment through the Pearson VUE website or by phone.
The NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN exams cover a wide range of topics related to nursing practice, including but not limited to: safe and effective care environment, health promotion and maintenance, psychosocial integrity, and physiological integrity. The specific content areas and number of questions may vary for each exam.
Preparation for the NCLEX should include a combination of review courses, practice exams, and self-study. Many nursing schools offer NCLEX review courses, and there are numerous study materials available online and in print. It’s important to develop a study plan that works for you and to give yourself plenty of time to review and practice.
The NCLEX-RN exam can consist of up to 265 questions, while the NCLEX-PN exam can consist of up to 205 questions. The length of the exam depends on your performance; it will continue until the computer determines with 95% confidence that your ability is above or below the passing standard.
The passing standard for the NCLEX is determined by the NCSBN and is based on the knowledge and skills required for entry-level nursing practice. The passing standard is reviewed and adjusted periodically to ensure that it remains fair and consistent.
If you fail the NCLEX, you must wait a minimum of 45 days before you can retake the exam. You will need to reregister with Pearson VUE and pay the exam fee again. It’s important to use the time between attempts to identify areas where you need to improve and to continue studying and practicing.
Your NCLEX eligibility, which is granted by the nursing regulatory body when you apply for licensure, is typically valid for a specific period of time (e.g., one year). If you do not take the exam within this time frame, you may need to reapply and pay any necessary fees again.
